what generation is my intel core i7. Recognizing an Intel processor by its model number is not always straightforward for the average user. Intel has dozens of CPUs on the market, with different architectures, with many generations, and with a focus on covering multiple areas, from a smart mobile to a workstation.
It is useful to know the meaning of each part of the character number scheme that Intel uses to know its features and also to make sure that it is suitable for our needs or compatible with this motherboard when buying. Where we are going to install it.

Which processor have I installed?
The average consumer who buys an assembled computer may have forgotten the exact model of the processor that the manufacturer has installed. If we want to know its features and characteristics then we have to know it first.
In Windows operating systems, an easy way is to access Control Panel> System, where we can see, among other things, the microprocessor that we have installed.
In the picture, you will see that in this case, it is an Intel Core i7-4700MQ, with a frequency of 2.4 GHz, but we do not have much data about its features and what this name means. We will see this in the next section.
Identify the Intel Sky lake processor.
The image used is very descriptive of each part of the letter-number scheme. We review them in detail:
- Intel brand (Core, Pentium, Celeron …)
- Brand modifier (i7, i5, i3).
- Generation indicator, number 6 in this case, which is equivalent to the sixth generation of core processors, Skylake.
- Digitized by SKU (stock keeping unit or reference number). Identifier is used to track a product.
- Optional suffixes representing the processor line:
- “K”: Desktop – Unlock multiplier for easy overclocking
- “T”: Tabletop – Suitable for power.
- “HK”: Portable – High Performance Graphics and Multipler Unlocked
- “H”: Portable – high performance graphics
- “HQ”: Portable – high performance graphics and quad core CPU
- “U”: portable – extremely low consumption
Identify the Broadwell and Haswell processors.
Exactly the same as the previous one, Intel uses a character number scheme based on the first generation and product line before the brand and its modifier if applicable.
In the picture, we see that the generation indicator number is “5” which corresponds to the fifth generation of core processors, code name Broadwell. The suffixes for Skylake vary, and for example, the letter “C” corresponds to an unlocked multiplication.
In the picture below we see that the Haswell Generation indicator number is “4” which corresponds to the fourth generation of core processors. For this generation, the number of suffixes is high, always with one or two characters indicating whether they are mic desktops or portable, unlocked multipliers, high performance, or extremely low voltage. Intel Xeon Mobile
The first processors of the Xeon series for notebooks have started with the new generation Skylake. The new processor numbering system is a literal representation of the product line, product family, and version.
This is a special case and version number is not used in the first generation of processors. Product line suffixes include the letter “M” to indicate that they are for a mobile workstation.
