I decided to write a separate article that would explain in detail how to connect a TV to an ordinary stationary computer via HDMI cable. The topic is relevant and I am often asked about it. In fact, nothing complicated. But there are some subtleties that we will try to understand within the framework of this article.
Almost all TVs, even the latest ones, have at least one HDMI input. And on the computer, behind the system unit, is an HDMI output. This means that we can easily connect the PC to the TV using a simple HDMI cable, which can be purchased from all digital device stores.
Why connect them?
Everything is very simple. Can act as a TV monitor. That is, you can display a picture of a computer on a TV screen. The TV can be used as a main monitor or as another monitor. This means that the image of the PC will appear on the screen of a traditional monitor and TV at the same time. Or just on TV. It depends on what you do. It should be noted that not only image but also sound is output through HDMI.
Check HDMI ports on TV and computer, select cable First, we need to check if our devices have the required ports. We also need an HDMI cable to connect. Let’s take a closer look at everything.
If you have everything, you can go directly to the connection and configuration. If you have ports on both devices and you have cable, you can connect.
We connect the TV to the computer using the HDMI cable. All you need to do is pick up a cable, connect it to the computer’s HDMI output and the TV’s HDMI input.
Important! Devices must be connected when they are turned on and off.
There is a danger of burning of ports. There are such cases.
If you connect the TV as a monitor, ie single screen, the outline will look like this:
Let’s consider another case where a TV and a monitor will be connected at the same time.
TV as a second monitor for PC
The monitor can also be connected via HDMI (as in my picture below), via DVI, or even via VGA. As a result, two displays will be connected to the PC.
We discovered the connection. Most likely, in your case there is already a system unit to which the monitor is attached.
And all you have to do is connect another TV to it.
Select HDMI input as signal source in TV settings.
Most of the time, after connecting and turning on the devices, there is no picture on the TV. “No signal”, “No signal source selected” or similar text will appear. On TV, you need to select the signal source. The port where we connect the cable.
This requires a separate “SOURCES” or “INPUT” button on your TV remote.
After clicking on it, a menu should open where you can select the signal source. You can see which port on the TV you have connected the cable to (each port has its own number) … or just select an active source. The actual process may vary depending on the TV. I have an old LG.
An image from the computer should appear on the TV. This will be a copy of what appears on the monitor (if any) or a clear desktop (extension). Importantly, the image from the computer appeared on the TV screen. Also, in Windows settings, we can change the image display mode already. There are many of them.
Configuring HDMI-connected TVs in Windows
In most cases the screen resolution is adjusted automatically. Therefore, in Windows settings, we can only change the mode of operation with multiple screens. This is relevant only when the monitor and TV are connected to the PC. If there is only one screen, these settings are not necessary.
The easiest way to change the mode in Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7 is with the keyboard shortcut Win + P.
After clicking on them, the “Project” menu will appear. In the top ten, it looks like this:
Here’s how to do it on Windows 7:
Let’s take a closer look at each mode.
In most cases, these settings are sufficient.
Additional screen options
To open them, just right-click on a desktop space. In Windows 10, you need to select “Display Settings”, and in Windows 7 – “Screen Resolution”.
A window with settings will open, where you can see how many displays are connected to the computer.
You can also specify them (by clicking the “Define” button), changing the resolution and mode of operation of each screen (which I mentioned above).
In Windows 7, the HDMI-connected TV setup looks like this:
Solution with image adjustment on computer.
What if the sound from the computer doesn’t reach the TV?
This often happens. The picture appears on the TV, but the sound does not. It is not at all, or it comes from the sound connected to the computer speaker system … If you want the sound to pass through the TV, the first step is to check whether the sound of the TV is silent or crooked. ۔
Your TV should be in the list of devices. You need to right-click on it and set “Use by default”.
If the TV is not listed, right-click on an empty space and check the box next to the two items: “Show offline devices” and “Show offline devices.”
If that doesn’t help, and there is no sound from the PC to the TV, try reinstalling the video card driver. Just download it and run the installation. Please allow the HDMI cable to be connected to the computer at this time.
How to check these settings in Windows 7, I showed in the article. Be sure to check it out and read the comments. There is a lot of useful information out there.
I’ve never had an issue with HDMI audio output. How many connections I made, everything worked right after the connection. But that’s the problem.
Not only Windows tools can stream video to the TV screen. Owners have the opportunity to provide high quality streaming via the video adapter driver (Nvidia or Radeon). The setup algorithm remains the same: we connect the TV to the computer via HDMI and set the HDMI signal source by remote control.
But then the video card maker software brand. Search the Display tab, accessing the Nvidia Geforce Experience app or the Control Panel of the AMD Catalyst Control Center. One of the sub-paragraphs of this menu is responsible for arranging different screens.
